2014 NFL Draft First Round Grades: Minnesota Vikings

9th Overall Pick: Anthony Barr, DE/OLB, UCLE

This could be where the slide for Johnny Manziel really takes off. The Vikings slid back one spot in exchange for a 5th round selection from the Browns. Like the Browns, the Vikings went defense instead of reaching for a quarterback. I thought for sure they would be going Aaron Donald if they went defense, but Barr isn't a bad option either. His stock has slowly slid over the past few months, as he was once considered a top 10 prospect. He definitely fills the pass rushing need, so this is a solid but unspectacular selection.

GRADE: B

32nd Overall Pick: Teddy Bridgewater, QB, Louisville

The Vikings acquired this pick from Seattle in exchange for their second rounder and their fourth round pick. Not a bad trade to jump Houston and Oakland for a quarterback. I thought for sure it was going to be for Carr, but Bridgewater is just as solid of a selection. Some mocks had him sliding into round three, but I never bought that. I still think he's the most NFL ready quarterback from this class, and I'd be surprised if he wasn't the week one starter. I love this pick for the Vikings, who most people thought would be selecting their signal caller in the top ten.

GRADE: A

    1. So explain what is wrong with Bridgewater. You are complaining, so tell us why, or is all you can do is whine

  2. Although I agree Ponder is not the answer. He lost how many games last year in the last 2 minutes because the DEFENSE gave up a touchdown. The Vikings needed to go Defense 1st, without a doubt. Not sure if I would have trade up 9 spots for a QB but that's Speilmans call. So far so good lets see what else they can do.

  3. Whats not to understand? Manziel is a bust, that's why the vikes didn't pick him.

  9. I had our draft order needs to be LB, CB, OG, QB. So I am quite happy with our first round. Trading up 8 spots to get Bridgewater and only giving up a 5th rounder makes me very happy. Now we can fill CB/OG spots in the 5th round and fill depth needs in later rounds. With our free agent acquisitions I am quite pleased with the changes so far under or new coaches!

  10. You never know how these guys are going to play in the NFL. Some make it and some don't. But what I do know is defense wins Superbowls, so Im glad to see them drafting defensive players to. So far I like what I see in the draft and players they have signed in free agency. I also think Coach Zimmer, Coach Turner and the rest of the coaching staff will do a great job for our team. And as for Manziel or Bridgewater as QB? We will see.
